Herein, we report three hybrid metal halides (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>ZnBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>, (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>CdBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>, and (Bmpip)<small><sub>8<\/sub><\/small>Pb<small><sub>11<\/sub><\/small>Br<small><sub>30<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;(where Bmpip<small><sup>+<\/sup><\/small>&nbsp;is 1-butyl-1-methyl-piperidinium, C<small><sub>10<\/sub><\/small>H<small><sub>22<\/sub><\/small>N<small><sup>+<\/sup><\/small>). (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>ZnBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;and (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>CdBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;crystallize in the&nbsp;<em>P<\/em>2<small><sub>1<\/sub><\/small>\/<em>c<\/em>&nbsp;space group with zero-dimensional crystal structures with [<em>M<\/em>Br<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>]<small><sup>2\u2212<\/sup><\/small>&nbsp;(<em>M<\/em>&nbsp;= Zn, Cd) tetrahedra isolated by Bmpip<small><sup>+<\/sup><\/small>. (Bmpip)<small><sub>8<\/sub><\/small>Pb<small><sub>11<\/sub><\/small>Br<small><sub>30<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;crystallizes in the triclinic space group&nbsp;<em>P<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/images\/entities\/char_0031_0304.gif\" alt=\"[1 with combining macron]\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;with one-dimensional corrugated chains constructed from face-sharing [PbBr<small><sub>6<\/sub><\/small>]<small><sup>4\u2212<\/sup><\/small>&nbsp;octahedra. All of the compounds exhibit excellent ambient and thermal stability. Under UV excitation, all three compounds exhibit very broad emissions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements indicate that the broad emissions of (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>ZnBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;and (Bmpip)<small><sub>2<\/sub><\/small>CdBr<small><sub>4<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;can be attributed to both the organic cations and self-trapped excitons (STEs) and that the emission of (Bmpip)<small><sub>8<\/sub><\/small>Pb<small><sub>11<\/sub><\/small>Br<small><sub>30<\/sub><\/small>&nbsp;is assigned to STEs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the three compounds adopt a direct band gap.
