Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure of La1\u2212<em>x<\/em>Ce<em>x<\/em>Si3N5\u00a0reveals that Ce atoms substituted for La atoms occupy 4a crystallographic positions. Broad emission and excitation bands observed were attributed to the transitions between the doublet ground state of the 4f1\u00a0configuration and the crystal field components of the 5d1\u00a0excited state. At 77\u00a0K, the centroid and crystal field splitting\u00a0<em>\u03b5<\/em>cfs\u00a0of the 5d levels of Ce3+\u00a0in LaSi3N5:Ce3+\u00a0compounds were valuated at 33.4\u00d7103\u00a0and 11.3\u00d7103\u00a0cm\u22121, respectively.
